In Mac OS X, every item in the file system has an owner, a group, and permissions. These determine what each user can do with it. If you are not logged in as a user who has sufficient permission to access an item, you will be unable to manipulate that item in File Buddy. File Buddy’s Administrator mode provides a way to give you access every item in the file system with the exception of some very special system files.
The following describe the various aspects of using File Buddy in Administrator mode:
Additional notes
- It is strongly recommended that Administrator mode be left enabled only as long as it is needed to accomplish a specific task that requires it.
- Administrator mode is not available when the user is logged in as root.
Many critical system files in Mac OS X have permissions that under normal circumstances will prevent you from doing anything which could cause a problem. Administrator mode circumvents this safety mechanism, so use it with due care. You have been warned.
